Leeds United told £50m needed for Chelsea striker Liam Delap

Leeds United told £50m needed for Chelsea striker Liam Delap

Chelsea have reassigned the number nine jersey previously worn by Liam Delap to Joao Pedro, according to reports.

The development has coincided with Leeds United being credited with an interest in acquiring the centre-forward.

The Elland Road outfit are understood to be monitoring Delap’s circumstances at Stamford Bridge, though sources suggest they are not currently in a position to pursue a transfer.

Chelsea are believed to be valuing the former Ipswich Town forward at £50m, a figure deemed prohibitive by potential suitors.

A temporary move could represent a more viable alternative.

Clubs reportedly monitoring the situation, including Everton and Nottingham Forest alongside Leeds, are said to believe a transfer might be achievable nearer the £40m mark.

Forest have emerged as the leading candidates to secure Delap’s signature, according to insider sources.

Delap arrived at Chelsea from Ipswich Town during last summer’s transfer window for £20m, with the club activating a release clause triggered by Ipswich’s relegation from the Premier League.

Como of Italy have also expressed interest, though Delap is understood to prioritise remaining in England’s top flight this season.

Newcastle United had previously been linked with a move for the former England under-21 international.

Ipswich Town have been tentatively connected with attempting to re-sign their former striker.

Hull City, by contrast, have not approached Chelsea regarding their former loanee.

Hull’s owner Acun Ilicali recently stated that while the club holds affection for Delap, no formal enquiries were made this season.

Leeds head coach Daniel Farke declined to comment on potential striker acquisitions during Thursday’s pre-match media obligations, declining to discuss specific positions or player profiles.

Several forwards have featured in transfer speculation surrounding Leeds in recent weeks, including Ayase Ueda, Carlos Espi, Ermedin Demirovic and Nicolo Tresoldi.

Tresoldi is not expected to return from a knee ligament injury until 2026.

Wrexham have also been credited with interest in the former Germany international.

The player arrived on a free transfer from Wolfsburg last summer but his contract expires at the end of the current campaign.

Piroe’s existing deal is also due to conclude at the same time.

Calvert-Lewin represents the club’s sole long-term striking option, with his contract extending until the conclusion of the 2025-26 season.
