Anton Stach has revealed that a previous set-piece attempt influenced his choice to aim for the front post with his match-winning free-kick for Leeds United in their clash with Nottingham Forest.
The midfielder – who has scored four direct free-kicks since joining, more than any other player in the Premier League – drilled an 88th-minute dead ball past the sprawling Matz Sels to spark wild celebrations among the away supporters.
The victory marked Leeds’ first opening-day Premier League success on the road since 1996. Stach had previously attempted to guide a wide free-kick into the net but failed to hit the target, prompting Daniel Farke to turn around and shake his head.
However, that initial effort actually gave Stach the belief to strike decisively in the closing moments. He told LUTV that the first attempt was not terrible, just past the far post, so he decided to aim for the near post in stoppage time and it paid off, describing it as an incredible feeling in front of the supporters.
Stach required more time to build his fitness during pre-season after suffering a deep-cut ankle injury during the final home match of the previous campaign. This has limited his ability to reach peak condition, and he acknowledged feeling the intensity of the game at certain points.
Stach added that while his first half was far from his best performance, the team continued to push forward and has adjusted to Premier League football, enabling them to secure victories such as this one.
Speaking to Premier League Productions, Stach emphasised how crucial a positive start is, particularly in such a challenging away fixture. He described the contest as extremely competitive with numerous physical battles and winning loose balls, expressing satisfaction at coming away with all three points.
The team approaches each match individually rather than looking too far ahead. They want to begin well, maintain that level, and accumulate points as quickly as possible. The recent signings have integrated effectively into what was a demanding fixture, and Stach expressed hope that the team maintains their chemistry throughout the campaign.
