Leeds held to 1-1 draw at Brighton as Dominic Calvert-Lewin misses two big chances

Leeds United striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is expected to feel frustration after passing up several promising opportunities during Saturday’s encounter at Brighton’s Amex Stadium.

The Yorkshire club was forced to settle for a share of the spoils following a 1-1 outcome on the south coast.

Jayden Bogle handed the visitors an early advantage when he found the net inside the opening fifteen minutes.

However, the goal originated from a missed opportunity by Calvert-Lewin, whose close-range header was kept out by Bart Verbruggen before Ao Tanaka delivered the assist that Bogle converted.

The England international squandered another excellent opening shortly afterwards, racing through on goal and attempting to round the Brighton goalkeeper before seeing his effort cleared off the goal line.

Former Premier League midfielder Danny Murphy suggested that Calvert-Lewin would be let down by his finishing.

Murphy observed that such situations represented high-quality openings for a striker of his calibre and emphasised the importance of converting them to build momentum, warning that repeated misses could lead to anxiety.

Leeds head coach Daniel Farke acknowledged that his team had created sufficient opportunities to claim all three points.

Despite Brighton’s superior shot count, Leeds matched their opponents for efforts on target and generated a greater number of significant chances.

Farke described the outcome as a valuable point given Brighton’s quality and the difficulty of playing at the Amex.

Another analyst concurred with this assessment, noting that the hosts perhaps deserved maximum rewards given the chances they manufactured.

The draw extended Leeds’ unbeaten run across their opening four matches in all competitions.

Prior results included two victories over Nottingham Forest and stalemates against Brentford on both occasions.

With five points from a possible nine, the club occupies a mid-table position ahead of a Carabao Cup second-round journey to Chelsea on Wednesday.
