Daniel Farke has indicated that Dominic Calvert-Lewin could still force his way into England’s Euro 2028 plans if he maintains strong form throughout the season.
The Leeds forward netted 14 top-flight goals during the previous campaign, having featured in every Premier League matchday squad since his first appearance. His impressive displays resulted in a return to the national team setup in March, almost five years after his previous international appearance.
Despite this, the forward was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the North American tour this summer, and he will be 33 when the subsequent World Cup takes place. Nonetheless, Leeds manager Farke believes forwards frequently improve with age, citing Harry Kane as an illustration.
The Leeds manager, speaking ahead of his side’s encounter with Nottingham Forest this weekend, noted that Kane became prolific from around 24 to 25 years old, having not scored as freely before that point. He suggested Calvert-Lewin has followed a similar trajectory.
During his mid-twenties, the forward was outstanding at Everton with his goal-scoring statistics, though he then endured two or three challenging seasons. Farke expressed optimism that Calvert-Lewin is now entering his peak years and can continue delivering.
He added that continued strong performances would likely reignite discussion about international representation and future tournaments, emphasising that everything depends on consistent club performances.
Calvert-Lewin, who will be 31 when the home European Championship arrives, is expected to continue as Leeds’ primary backup forward next season while the club simultaneously seeks additional striking options.
Although the forward remained fully fit throughout the previous season, concerns exist about potential drops in standards should he sustain any lengthier injury absence. His absence from the opening two summer friendlies following a setback further highlighted these concerns.
Farke confessed to having concerns about Calvert-Lewin following the England omission and summer knee issue, though he reports the player has returned to his best condition.
He elaborated that disappointment at missing the World Cup opportunity, combined with a knee problem from the end of the previous season that required treatment during the close season, meant he sat out the initial pre-season weeks. While this was not an ideal beginning, his displays since rejoining full training have been impressive, with particularly strong showings in recent weeks where he appeared sharp and energised.
There are no guarantees this translates into the new season, but early indications are encouraging. Farke hopes Calvert-Lewin remains available and maintains his appetite, which could result in another productive campaign with double figures and strong performances. He will prove vital to the team and needs to be operating at peak condition.
