Leeds beat Forest to advance to Carabao Cup next round

Leeds United progress past Nottingham Forest in the second-round League Cup encounter at the City Ground. The visitors secured a valuable result against their Championship opponents.

Just three days prior, Anton Stach had clinched Leeds’ inaugural Premier League victory of the campaign with a late free-kick strike. The German midfielder found the net in the 88th minute to delight the travelling supporters.

The squad named for this cup fixture closely mirrors the one that triumphed at the weekend, though Daniel Farke signalled his intention to implement more extensive rotation than would typically occur during a midweek league fixture. Consequently, several alterations to the starting eleven were anticipated.

Among those primed for involvement was Nico Elvedi, who completed his switch from Borussia Monchengladbach to Elland Road during the previous week. Additionally, a collection of promising young talents appeared set for places among the substitutes, while Noah Okafor was handed his first starting appearance of the term.

The match unfolded with Forest getting proceedings underway, the home side showing no alterations to their lineup. Leeds established themselves in their tactical shape, appearing to employ a wing-back formation with Daniel James stationed on the right flank and Justin positioned on the left, as Longstaff operated in an advanced midfield role during the opening exchanges.

Leeds survived an early spell of Forest pressure involving a corner and a long throw before crafting their inaugural meaningful opportunity. Nmecha threaded the ball through to James on the right wing, whose subsequent cross was comfortably gathered by Sels in the Forest goal.

The home side began to assert themselves, with Dominguez testing Trafford from a tight angle. The Forest midfielder struck a powerful effort goalward from inside the penalty area where he found himself unmarked, only for the goalkeeper to dive low and repel the shot.

Forest continued to press, with Aina bursting down the right flank and attempting to deliver a cross, though he lost his footing with the ball arcing dangerously toward goal. Trafford had to acrobatically palm the ball behind for a corner.

A long throw caused problems for Leeds, with Jesus’s header from the set-piece destined for the far corner until Justin cleared the ball off the goal line. Trafford had been beaten by the initial effort.

Okafor then charged upfield for Leeds, attempting to latch onto a through ball, but the forward’s strike drifted narrowly wide of the target.

The home side constructed another promising move as Dominguez forced Trafford into a fingertip save from the edge of the area, the goalkeeper tipping the ball over the crossbar.

At the other end, Okafor displayed quick footwork before laying the ball to Ampadu, though the resulting effort lacked any real menace. Forest responded by introducing several fresh legs, including Murillo, Ndoye and Hudson-Odoi.

Tanaka intercepted possession in Forest’s defensive third and fed the ball back to Nmecha, who recycled it to Longstaff. The midfielder’s subsequent cross sailed harmlessly across the penalty area with no teammate able to capitalize.

Forest broke forward after Leeds lost the ball, with Wood proceeding through on goal courtesy of a nutmeg on Elvedi. Rodon rescued the situation with a crucial goal-saving challenge at the crucial moment.

The ball dropped invitingly inside the box and the opposition goalkeeper was body-checked, winning a free-kick for the infringement. Trafford required treatment after taking a collision but quickly recovered.

Okafor delivered a cross toward the far post where Nmecha lurked unmarked, yet the striker could not quite direct his header on target.

James then found space on the counter-attack after Forest squandered possession, racing through on goal and maintaining his composure to finish past Sels.

A minute later, James attempted an ambitious strike from distance, veering dangerously close to Sels’ right-hand post before bouncing narrowly past.

Tanaka produced an excellent pass to release James, who opted for the cutback to Longstaff. With the goalkeeper off his line, Longstaff’s effort cannoned into Sels’ waiting hands.

Nmecha then contrived to fire wide following a back-heel attempt after James had worked space for a cross.

Okafor accelerated down the left channel and sent James wide of the pitch. The subsequent delivery was sent skyward and Tanaka attempted a volley that sailed over the crossbar.

Leeds broke swiftly as Okafor surged forward once more, though the ball rolled past the far post.

The visitors endured a setback when Jesus received the ball, was struck in the face, then fouled his opponent from behind in frustration. The midfielder’s discontent was evident in that challenge.

A magnificent ball around the corner sent James clear once more. He selected the correct pass to Longstaff, whose shot was saved by Sels and should have found the net.

Elvedi was left exposed as Wood skipped past the defender on the edge of the box and squared the ball for Dominguez, who lashed a shot goalward that Trafford repelled.

The second half began with significant alterations. Okafor and Tanaka departed, replaced by Wilson, Stach and Aaronson.

Dominguez struck an effort that forced Trafford to palm the ball over the crossbar from the edge of the area.

Longstaff was cautioned for a mistimed challenge and subsequently substituted as part of a flurry of substitutions.

Elvedi inadvertently handled inside the penalty area according to the home supporters, though replays suggested the ball struck his chest.

Aaronson drove forward before slipping the ball to Wilson afterSkinning past his opponent. DCL was teed up but drove his attempt straight into Sels’ midsection.

James made way for another replacement.

Forest introduced fresh attacking options as Murillo, Ndoye and Hudson-Odoi entered the fray, bringing with them increased attacking threat.

Nmecha was brought on in place of DCL.

The home side fashioned another opportunity as Dominguez broke through and unleashed a powerful strike toward goal from inside the area while unguarded. Trafford threw himself to his left to preserve the clean sheet.

A second wave of Forest substitutions followed, with Hudson-Odoi and others joining the fray.

Okafor departed for the visitors, making way for Nmecha.

James was introduced to the fray.

The match entered stoppage time, with six additional minutes signalled following a pitch invasion where a spectator collided with a steward.

The home supporters finally had something to celebrate as their side equalised through a goal credited to Justin. A cluster of players forced the ball over the goal line and it was Justin who applied the finishing touch from close range.

Farke’s side had accomplished their objective, securing their second League Cup triumph during his tenure as manager.

James and Elvedi impressed throughout, while Trafford produced a string of exceptional saves to preserve the lead.
