Tarik Muharemovic has made an impressive start to life at Leeds United since linking up with the squad during their American tour.
The Bosnian centre-back produced a stunning performance on debut against Sunderland and has since faced Liverpool and Manchester United. His spectacular bicycle kick against Augsburg stole the headlines though.
After the 4-0 victory at Elland Road, the man of the match spoke to journalists about the strike, saying he simply jumped and attempted the shot without overthinking it. He expressed gratitude that it paid off, describing his first goal on home soil as an unforgettable moment.
On the pitch, his integration with fellow defenders has been seamless. Away from football, he has also settled in comfortably with his new teammates. One player he struck up an immediate connection with is Anton Stach, whose social media activities are well documented.
Muharemovic took on the role of camera operator for Stach as the German midfielder walked the streets of New York asking local women to rate photographs of himself and other Leeds defenders out of ten. The responses were frequently harsh.
Reflecting on the lighthearted video, Muharemovic spoke of how entertaining it was. He explained that he and Stach, who communicate in German, were in contact virtually every day during the tour.
Stach also prompted the women to speculate about his identity and profession.
Muharemovic revealed he was already aware that Stach had a passion for content creation beyond football, so he was happy to participate by filming the segment.
Another teammate he quickly bonded with is Jaka Bijol. Manager Daniel Farke has his Welsh contingent in Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon, but now also has a strong Balkan pairing in Muharemovic and Bijol.
Both players were born in Slovenia, though Muharemovic represents Bosnia & Herzegovina at international level through his family heritage. Interestingly, his first goal for his national team came against Bijol’s Slovenia last year.
Bijol has spoken about how Muharemovic has brought extra camaraderie to the group given their shared roots and ability to converse in the same language. When asked whether he felt similarly, Muharemovic confirmed he did, explaining that upon learning of his transfer, he was pleased to discover Bijol was already at the club.
He emphasised how valuable it is to have a fellow Balkan player who speaks his language and shares his mindset. He described Bijol as an exceptional individual who has supported him since day one, always being available when needed.
Muharemovic also expressed gratitude for his teammate’s qualities as a footballer, believing they can bring a distinctly Balkan resilience to the team.
Prior to joining, Muharemovic had researched Leeds thoroughly and was aware of the passionate fanbase after watching Noah Okafor’s first interview following his summer arrival.
In that clip, Okafor described his surprise at the number of Leeds supporters present at Aviva Stadium when he faced the club while playing for AC Milan in Dublin.
Muharemovic said his own experience mirrored that, recalling being amazed by the atmosphere at Croke Park and how special it felt to perform in such an iconic venue surrounded by such devoted followers.
The backing from supporters was a significant factor in his eagerness to sign, alongside the vision the 49ers presented to him. The club demonstrated considerable enthusiasm for his recruitment and showed him a comprehensive overview of the organisation, including its rich heritage and future ambitions.
The 23-year-old is particularly looking forward to his first home Premier League fixture against Brentford. Farke understands that some adjustment time may be necessary given this is only his second season in the top division and his first experience of English football.
Muharemovic acknowledges the challenges ahead but remains confident in his abilities. He described the Premier League as universally recognised as the finest and most demanding competition globally, stating his readiness for the physical and tactical demands despite knowing it will be demanding.
He expressed his desire to work alongside his colleagues and the entire club to accomplish their objectives.
Overall, Muharemovic has been delighted with how pre-season has progressed, describing his initial weeks as tremendous. He praised the warm reception he received and highlighted the daily intensity of training sessions. The squad understands what is required of them and is focused on displaying their abilities while progressing methodically towards their targets.
